起源
黄道带是天球上黄道两边各8°的一条带，日、月、星辰的运动路径都处在黄道带内。古人为了表示太阳在黄道上的位置，把黄道分为十二段，叫作“黄道十二宫”，每宫包括一个星座，分别是：白羊座、金牛座、双子座、巨蟹座、狮子座、处女座、天秤座、天蝎座、人马座、摩羯座、宝瓶座和双鱼座。由于黄道星座的形象多是动物，所以古希腊人把黄道带称为zoidiakos kyklos (兽带)，后来简称为zoidiakos，该词进入拉丁语后写作zodiacus，在法语中写作zodiaque，十四世纪进入英语后写作zodiac。

起源
zoo一词的词源是希腊语zoion(动物)。1828年，伦敦动物协会(theZoological Society of London)在摄政公园(Regent's Park)的北侧展出野生动物，并将此地称为the ZoologicalGardens，不久后简称为the Zoological，到1840年以后直接缩略为zoo，意思依然是“动物园”。
